چکیده

Viruses, or Virus-Like Particles (VLPs), occur in large numbers (~10-10 VLPs/ml) and are acknowledged to be general constituents of aquatic ecosystems. The bactericidal effect of VLPs derived from cultured marine strains and natural marine waters were examined under various multiplicity of infection (MOI = 5.28 0.0017) using Escherichia coli AB1157 as the recipient. The E. coli population was reduced by as much as one to two orders of magnitude. Transduction frequencies between 10 and 10/VLP were observed for all VLPs studied. The VLPs examined here may differ from current concepts of viruses with narrow host ranges. Such VLPs are likely to control microbial populations and promote microbial diversity by non-specific gene transfer with hosts composing a wider phylogenetic range in natural microbial populations.

12 Measuring Bacterial Biomass Production and Growth Rates from Leucine Incorporation in Natural Aquatic Environments

The rate of biomass production is a fundamental property of all organisms in nature, but it is an especially important parameter of microbes in natural aquatic environments. An estimate of microbial production can be used as a general index of microbial activity and specifically to calculate growth rates. Since many processes scale with it, biomass production can be used to obtain a first-order...

Extinction of microbes: evidence and potential consequences

Microbes, i.e. viruses, prokaryotes, protists and fungi are main players in biogeochemical cycles in aquatic and soil systems. As predators, pathogens, commensals and symbionts they are associated with multicellular life forms. Microbes show a dazzling array of biodiversity and it has been argued that due to their small size and huge numbers, microbes are distributed worldwide (‘everything is e...

Effect of lethal concentration of Nano Silver in Aphanius dispar

Rising trend of production and use of nanoparticles can lead to the possibility of their release into aquatic environments. Therefore, knowing toxic effects of these materials on aquatic organisms is of great importance. The objective of this research was to study the acute toxicity of colloidal silver nanoparticles (CAgNPs) through determining the lethal concentrations in the euryhaline teleos...

A Molecular Study of Microbe Transfer between Distant Environments

BACKGROUND Environments and their organic content are generally not static and isolated, but in a constant state of exchange and interaction with each other. Through physical or biological processes, organisms, especially microbes, may be transferred between environments whose characteristics may be quite different. The transferred microbes may not survive in their new environment, but their DN...

Remote collection of microorganisms at two depths in a freshwater lake using an unmanned surface vehicle (USV)

Microorganisms are ubiquitous in freshwater aquatic environments, but little is known about their abundance, diversity, and transport. We designed and deployed a remote-operated water-sampling system onboard an unmanned surface vehicle (USV, a remote-controlled boat) to collect and characterize microbes in a freshwater lake in Virginia, USA. The USV collected water samples simultaneously at 5 a...

Emergence and Dispersion of Resistance Genes by the Aquatic Environment: a review

The association of the emergence of bacterial resistance to clinical environments is common; however, aquatic environments, especially the polluted ones, also play a key role in this regard. Aquatic environments can act as facilitator for the exchange of mobile elements, responsible for resisting antibiotics. They even may stimulate the emergence and selection of these elements through contamin...
